A suicide bomber targeting a security base along the Pakistani-Afghani border killed eight soldiers after driving his vehicle into a convoy leaving the base.
The Pakistani soldiers had been leaving their base in Wana inside the northwestern province of South Waziristan when the bomber struck. The province is considered one of the most volatile areas in the continuing fight between Pakistani soldiers and al-Qaeda and Taliban militants.
Sunday’s attack is seen as a response to a U.S. missile strike on Friday that reportedly killed 20 people in the region.
