Bolivia Suspends Operations of U.S. DEA in Country

Bolivia has announced the operations carried out by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration would be suspended “indefinitely” in response to what President Evo Morales called the DEA’s support of an attempted coup d’état in September.

Morales, a former leader of Bolivia’s union of coca-growers, has blamed the United States for the violence in September that left 19 people dead. Coca is the main ingredient in producing cocaine and is a major crop in Bolivia.

The U.S. and Bolivia have seen their relationship strained over the past several months as Morales expelled the U.S. international development agency from the country as well as the U.S. ambassador to La Paz while the U.S. countered by expelling the Bolivian ambassador in Washington.
