The AP Top 25 college football rankings have been released and following Texas Tech’s last minute comeback to knock off then #1 Texas the Alabama Crimson Tide have become the countries newest #1 while the Red Raiders jumped four spots to #2.
Alabama had little trouble disposing of Arkansas State on Saturday but have a tough road game next week when they face #15 LSU. The Crimson Tide will also have to win the SEC Championship if they are to find themselves in the national championship picture.
The Texas Tech Red Raiders showed some serious resolve on Saturday as they didn’t fold the tent went the Longhorns took the lead with just over a minute left in the game. Graham Harrell led the Red Raiders down the field and hit Michael Crabtree for the game-winning TD with one second left on the clock and that was enough for voters to put Texas Tech at the #2 spot but the road is still long. Next week they host #8 Oklahoma State and then have to travel to face #6 Oklahoma with a Big 12 championship still at stake.
Penn State had the week off and as a result they remain #3 in the AP Top 25. Critics have pointed to the Nittany Lions weak schedule but if they can take care of Iowa, Indiana and Michigan State they would be hard to pass up in a BCS national championship game.
The Florida Gators inched up a spot to #4 after blasting the then #8 Georgia Bulldogs in Jacksonville. Florida took the inside track for the SEC East title and if they take care of business they will likely face Alabama in the SEC Championship and could find themselves in the thick of a national championship race.
Following their loss in Lubbock the Longhorns of Texas tumbled to #5 this week. They will need some serious help from Oklahoma State and Oklahoma if they are to reach the Big 12 Championship game but if they do they could still find their way to Miami for the BCS title game.
The Oklahoma Sooners had no trouble embarrassing the Nebraska Cornhuskers yet still dropped two spots to #6 in the recent rankings. The Sooners have an uphill climb to reach the Big 12 Championship game as they need Texas to lose again and they still have to knock off Texas Tech and Oklahoma State.
