UN Delivers Aid to Assist More Than 250,000 Displaced in Democratic Republic of Congo

The United Nations has begun delivering aid to some of the 250,000 people displaced by the fighting between rebel troops and the Congolese military.

Rebel troops led by Gen. Laurent Nkunda have overrun government forces in the North Kivu province and they have vowed to continue their push until they overthrow the government unless they engaged in direct talks with them.

According to reports the UN convoy past by many refugee camps that had held several thousand refugees at one time were now empty.

The aid being delivered included medical supplies and water purification tablets but not food. Nkunda has promised to allow safe passage for the UN vehicles, ordering his rebel troops to provide “humanitarian corridors” through the rebel held territory.

Aid agencies have described the scene in Congo as a “human catastrophe” as rebel troops continue to push back soldiers who have been destroying villages as they retreat.
