AP Top 25 College Basketball Poll: UNC Tar Heels First Unanimous Preseason No. 1

The North Carolina Tar Heels are the No. 1 college basketball team in the nation, according to the AP preseason Top 25 rankings, which were released on Saturday.

UNC becomes the first unanimous No. 1 since the preseason AP poll began in 1981-82, and just the second team in history to be the preseason No. 1 for two consecutive seasons.

The Tar Heels, who were No. 1 in the final poll last season, joins UNLV in 1989-90 and 1990-91 as the only schools to do that in two straight seasons. It also marks North Carolina's record sixth time atop the preseason rankings, breaking a tie with the Duke Blue Devils.

The Tar Heels return its top six scorers, including Tyler Hansbrough, the unanimous National Player of the Year, after he decided to return to UNC for his senior year. UNC also returns Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington.

Last Thursday, North Carolina reported that Hansbrough was out indefinitely due to stress reaction in his right shin.

The preseason AP poll last season did an accurate job as the top four teams (North Carolina, UCLA Bruins, Memphis Tigers and Kansas Jayhawks) all reached the Final Four, with Kansas winning it all in San Antonio.

UNC reached the Final Four last season, but was knocked off by the Jayhawks. Kansas lost Brandon Rush, Darrell Arthur and Mario Chalmers to early departure into the NBA Draft. They are now ranked #23.

The other Final Four teams, UCLA Bruins and Memphis Tigers, are No. 4 and No. 12, respectively.

UConn Huskies and Louisville Cardinals are ranked No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, as Pittsburgh Panthers round out the top 5, continuing the success of the Big East conference. Notre Dame Fighting Irish, another Big East team, are also ranked in the top 10.
