The results of Thursday’s presidential election in Zambia was revealed on Sunday and two hours after Rupiah Banda was declared the winner the 71-year-old was sworn in, replacing Levy Mwanawasa who died in August following a stroke.
Opposition leader Michael Sata accused Banda’s Movement for Multiparty Democracy party of rigging the results and declared a “bunch of thieves” stole the election. Despite Sata’s cries election observers have said the election was free and fair and there was no evidence of impropriety.
Sata and his Patriotic Front party have written to the electoral commission for verification of how the votes were counted and are demanding a recount. Sunday’s results showed Banda had a narrow victory - 40.1 percent over Sata’s 38.1 percent.
