Atlanta Weather: Thousands of Flights Canceled, Schools Closed

Snow and ice blanketed Atlanta Monday morning, causing school closings and flight cancellations at Hartsfield Jackson International Airport. Many roads were deemed impassable and authorities have urged all residents to remain off the roads if possible. In most areas about 3 inches of snow covered the ground.

Rick Parham, a spokesman for the Georgia Department of Transportation, said highway crews were working to improve the condition of major highways. According to Parham, at least one lane in each direction on all major highways has been cleared. So far, there have been no reports of fatal accidents.

Thousands of flights to and from Atlanta’s Hartsfield Jackson Airport were canceled Monday. Delta canceled 330 flights Sunday and 1,400 flights Monday. AirTran canceled all flights on Monday. Officials say flights are scheduled to resume on Tuesday.

Also canceled on Monday was the inaugural gala for Georgia Governor elect Nathan Deal. The inauguration ceremony was moved from the state Capital steps to inside the House chamber.

National Weather Service meteorologist Daniel Lamb said the snow accumulation will most likely stick for a few days as temperatures are expected to remain below freezing into the week.
