Jared Lee Loughner the disturbed 22-year-old accused of shooting 20 people Saturday in Tucson, and killing six - was formally charged with the attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), the murder of U.S. District Judge John Roll and Giffords aide Gabe Zimmerman, and the wounding of three other congressional aides.
Appearing in shackles, his head shaved, a calm Loughner looked impassively at the big crowd gathered to peer at him at the federal courthouse in Phoenix. U.S. Magistrate Judge Lawrence Anderson ordered Loughner held without bail Monday after he was charged with murder and attempted assassination.
Loughner had little to say during the brief hearing, other than answering a few procedural questions and acknowledging that he understood the charges. He entered no plea and was ordered to appear back in court Jan. 24.
No family or friends of Loughner were in attendance the courtroom.
The hearing was moved from Tucson because Roll was a longtime judge at the federal courthouse there.
State charges for victims not employed by the federal government are pending.
