Colombian Army Commander Resigns Following Civilian Deaths Scandal

Gen. Mario Montoya, commander of the Colombian army, has resigned from his position following the ongoing scandal that has been tied to the murder of eleven civilians.

The bodies of eleven young men from Bogota were found near the Venezuelan border in August and September. Human rights groups have claimed the army lured the men from Bogota promising them jobs but then killed them in a military zone as a way to inflate their numbers related to rebel deaths.

Prior to Montoya’s resignation a total of 27 military personnel were dismissed as a result of the scandal. Among those targeted were three generals, 11 colonels and four captains.

The practice of killing civilians as a means of bolstering “rebel deaths” is believed to be a common occurrence in Colombia and has been the subject of several human rights campaigns.
