The Detroit Pistons completed a trade for Allen Iverson and signed a three-year extension for Richard Hamilton.
The Pistons received Iverson from the Denver Nuggets for All-Star guard Chauncey Billups, Antonio McDyess and prospect Cheikh Samb, who was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers for the Pistons with the 51st overall pick in the 2006 draft, on Monday.
On Monday night, the Pistons offered Hamilton a three-year extension worth an estimated $34 million.
Iverson, 33, has the third highest career scoring average (27.7) in NBA history, behind Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain.
Iverson, the 2001 NBA MVP, has been to one NBA Finals series, but will now join a team who has been won an NBA championship in 2004 and has been in the Eastern Conference Finals five straight years. Iverson's Detroit debut is expected to come Wednesday night in Toronto.
Billups, who starred at the University of Colorado, will return to his hometown of Denver. His playmaking ability is better suited to complement Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony than Iverson was.
The Nuggets failed to surpass the first round of the playoffs with Iverson, Anthony and Marcus Camby. Camby was traded to the L.A. Clippers prior to the season, leaving a whole in the defensive middle for Denver. The passing and scoring ability of Billups and the down-low presence of McDyess will be an asset to Denver.
While a member of the Philadelphia 76ers, Iverson was close to being traded to the Pistons in 2000, but the deal was not finalized. In 2006, he was then sent to the Nuggets.
McDyess reportedly said that he will be bought out of his contract by the Nuggets and will return to the Pistons in the offseason. However, Nuggets GM Rex Chapman said McDyess will stay with the team.
