Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has dismissed the country’s army chief Zaza Gogava after determining there had to be changes made following the recent conflict with Russia.
That conflict began on August 7 after Georgia attempted to reclaim the breakaway region of South Ossetia. In response to Georgia’s armed attempt Russia responded by sending military forces into the region to protect South Ossetia and drive Georgian forces out.
Russia sent forces into a second breakaway region, Abkhazia, and pushed its troops deep into Georgian territory before finally signing a peace agreement that led to a withdrawal. Russian forces have remained in South Ossetia and Abkhazia, something Saakashvili addressed when announcing Gogava’s dismissal.
Saakashvili stated “we must not forget that the enemy still stands at our door,” which appeared to be a shot at Russia’s continued presence in the breakaway regions.
