Barack Obama Elected 44th President of the United States, Becomes First African American to Hold Nation’s Highest Office

Illinois Senator Barack Obama has been elected the 44^th President of the United States on Tuesday evening, gaining enough electoral votes to beat his Republican rival, Arizona Senator John McCain, and become the first African American to hold the nation’s highest office.

Needing 270 electoral votes to win the election the Obama campaign got an early indication as to how the night would go as their Democratic candidate captured the key states of Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia, all states that McCain advisors said the Arizona Sen. would need to pull the upset.

Obama seemed to capitalize on the current state of the economy as the majority of voters polled after voting indicated that was the most important issue in their decision. For McCain, his party association with current President George Bush seemed to spell disaster as the theme of change led to the death of his campaign charge.

McCain conceded the election from a stage in Arizona where he congratulated Obama and urged all Americans to join together under the new president and strive to keep the nation great. President Bush also called Obama to congratulate the 47-year-old on the historic win.
