Kenya Declares Public Holiday Following Barack Obama Presidential Victory

Kenya’s President Mwai Kibaki has announced that the country will celebrate a public holiday on Thursday following the victory staged by Barack Obama in the presidential election in the United States on Tuesday night.

Obama’s father was from Kenya and many of his relatives still live in the African nation. As a whole, Kenyans took to the street in celebration following the Obama victory over Republican candidate John McCain.

Kibaki stated, “Your victory is not only an inspiration to millions of people all over the world, but it has special resonance with us here in Kenya.”

Obama has received congratulations from several African leaders including Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first black president, saying, “Your victory has demonstrated that no person anywhere in the world should not dare to dream of wanting to change the world for a better place.”
