Google Drops Plans for Advertising Partnership with Yahoo

Fearing a lengthy legal battle that would challenge the legality of the deal Internet search giant Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) has opted to abandon a planned advertising partnership with Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO).

Google feared anti-trust laws would have prohibited them from providing advertising for yahoo search results. The deal was said to be worth nearly $800 million a year to Yahoo, a significant sum for the struggling search engine.

For their part, Yahoo was disappointed in Google’s decision to back out of the deal as they saw it as a way of satisfying shareholders who remain bitter over the decision not to welcome Microsoft’s takeover offer earlier this year.

While Yahoo’s future remains uncertain they are still considered among the top two search engines in the world and regulators would have had a problem with their partnership with Google, the world’s number one search engine.
