California Proposition 8 Passed, Bans Gay Marriages

Californian’s voted Tuesday to pass Proposition 8, which will ban same-sex marriages in the state and call in to question the legitimacy of nearly 16,000 gay and lesbian marriages. The proposition was passed by just over 52 percent.

The proposition specified that only marriages between a man and a woman will be recognized and. Proposition 8 will rewrite the states constitution with those stipulations. Attorney Matthew D. Staver says that he believes California’s same-sex marriages will be annulled. “Constitutional amendments are retroactive,” he told People magazine.

The legal director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, Shannon Minter, tells People, “It would be almost unthinkable to retroactively take away somebody’s marriage status – it would be completely unprecedented and it almost defies description.”

The decision will affect many celebrity couple who were married earlier this year including Elle DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi and George Takei and Brad Altman. “We tasted marriage now, and it really is delicious!" Altman tells People. "And the thought that the people of California might take our marriage away from us is really frightening and worrisome and upsetting."

“I can’t return the wedding gifts. I love my new toaster,” DeGeneres joked.

Proposition 8 drew opposition from many other celebrities including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Steven Spielberg and Lindsay Lohan.
