Proposition 8 Passes as California Votes to Ban Same Sex Marriage

California voters have passed Proposition 8 and effectively banned the practice same-sex marriages in the state. The vote comes just a few months after a court ruling in the state recognized the right of gay couples to marry.

The passage of Proposition 8 is seen as a devastating loss for gay-rights activists who had hoped voters would shoot down the measure following the court’s ruling. With Proposition 8 now passed questions on the legality of the same-sex marriages during those few months remains in question.

Arizona and Florida voters also approved amendments that would ban same-sex marriage.
