Europe’s Largest Volcano Mount Etna Erupts

Mount Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano, erupted Wednesday. The Italian Institute of Vulcanology said tremors began Tuesday night and by Wednesday ash and lava was flowing down the eastern rim. The eruption continued into Thursday with the institute describing it as “rather weak” activity.

Etna is located on the east coast of Sicily about 18 miles from Catania. The volcano is 10,922 feet high and covers an area of 460 square miles. Despite being in an almost constant state of activity, Etna is not considered to be very dangerous. Its slopes are home to numerous farms and vineyards.
