42 Killed in Ferry Accident, Captain Detained by Investigators

The captain of a ferry that overturned after being battered by strong winds and big waves has been detained by Philippines investigators after 42 passengers drowned and another eight remain missing.

Investigators believe the man who captained the ferry Don Dexter Cathlyn had been operating the vessel illegally when he took it from the port of Masbate Island on Tuesday evening en route to Sorsogon province.

Shortly after leaving port the ferry was hit by an unforeseen storm that caused it to overturn. According to coast guard authorities Dante Bombales, the ferry’s captain, did not have clearance to leave port and may have been overloaded at time of departure.
