Thousands Flee as Rebels Take Town from Pro-Government Militia in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo

Thousands of civilians have fled from the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo town Kiwanja after rebels led by Laurent Nkunda forced pro-government militia from the area after two days of fighting.

Nkunda has claimed his Tutsi rebels are fighting to protect the Tutsi minority from Hutu FDLR rebels who fled Rwanda to Congo following the genocide of 1994. Nkunda has accused the Congolese government of aiding the Hutu rebels.

Hutu rebels slaughtered more than 750,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutus in the Rwandan genocide before Tutsi forces gained the upper hand. Hutu rebels then took refuge in neighboring Congo and Rwanda has long stated that the Congo hasn’t done enough to disarm the Hutu militia.

Nkunda has said his rebel troops won’t let up until Congolese leadership enters into direct talks with him, something Congolese President Joseph Kabila has refused to do.
