China Urges Barack Obama to Oppose Taiwanese Independence

China has wasted little time in reaching out to U.S. President-elect Barack Obama, urging the new leader to oppose Taiwan’s push for independence. While Taiwan has been ruled separately since 1949, China has always seen the island as a breakaway province that should be brought back under control by Beijing.

For some time the U.S. policy has been to support the one-China principle but just last month President George Bush pushed a measure that would sell Taipei $6 billion worth of weapons.

China’s ministry spokesman Qin Gang told a group of journalists in Beijing, “We urge the United States to honor its commitment... honor the one-China policy and stop selling weapons to Taiwan.”

A senior adviser to the Obama campaign stated earlier this year that the new president would not change the current U.S. policy regarding the Chinese-Taiwan issue.
