November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month, and for the next three weeks, Americans have the opportunity to do their part to increase awareness of lung-related cancers, including mesothelioma, a very rare but fatal type of cancer caused by previous exposure to asbestos.
Lung-related cancers lead to more American deaths than other types of cancer, including breast and colon, combined. Many people believe that smoking cigarettes is the only cause of lung cancer, but they are misinformed. In fact, a vast number of people who have never smoked find themselves diagnosed with lung cancer, which may be attributed to a family history of the disease or exposure to other carcinogens, such as benzene or radon.
It is important to understand the causes of lung-related cancers so that we can take all necessary precautions to prevent the development of disease.
With regards to mesothelioma, there are many activities that Americans can partake in this month to raise awareness of the disease. Hosting a fundraising event in your community, for example, is a great opportunity to provide information and education. An event that focuses on asbestos exposure prevention (which will ultimately prevent asbestos cancer) is an especially good idea, as many members of our community, including firefighters and construction workers, are at a heightened risk of occupational asbestos exposure.
Hosting a walk or run is also a great way to strengthen community relationships and educate the public. Participants can ask for donations from the community, which will provide much-needed funding for additional mesothelioma research, including studies related to mesothelioma treatment.
