Zimbabwe Power-Sharing Deal Collapses as Violence Sweeps Country

The power-sharing deal in Zimbabwe that was to bring peace to the troubled African nation has suffered yet another breakdown as opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has blamed President Robert Mugabe for the recent spate of violence that has hit the country.

Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change party said Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party was responsible for an “orgy of brutality” that has swept across the county and made it impossible for the two sides to forge a power-sharing deal that has been agreed upon but never implemented.

The two sides had signed an agreement in September that would have made Tsvangirai prime minister while Mugabe would have remained president. That agreement hit a snag when Mugabe opted to appoint key cabinet positions to ministers within his party. Angered by the move Tsvangirai criticized Mugabe for his unwillingness to compromise and live up to his end of the agreement.

Zimbabwe has been the center of controversy since their presidential elections last March. Results of those elections were released in May and they showed Tsvangirai had a majority of the votes yet it was determined he did not secure a large enough majority to avoid a runoff. With less than one week before the runoff election Tsvangirai pulled out of the race declaring Mugabe had made it impossible to hold free and fair elections.

Mugabe claimed victory but he faced heavy pressure from other African leaders to come to a power-sharing deal with the MDC and after months of talks an agreement was signed in September yet problems continue to arise that have prevented the deal from actually being fulfilled.

Problems within Zimbabwe are expected to be discussed at a weekend summit in South Africa where leaders will look to secure a deal that would end the political crisis and instability that has tormented the citizens within Zimbabwe.
