100 Die in Stampede in India

An car accident caused a deadly stampede near the Sabarimala Temple in India’s Kerala state late Friday night. Tens of thousands of people were crowded near the temple to celebrate the holy day Makara Jyothi when a vehicle overturned and sparked the stampede, which left 100 people dead and 14 others injured.

Stampedes are not uncommon in India. Many times they occur when thousands, or sometimes millions, of people attend festivals in remote and congested areas.
