Opposition Activists Demonstrate Against Georgian Leader Mikhail Saakashvili

Several thousand opposition activists packed the Georgian capital of Tbilisi to protest the leadership of President Mikhail Saakashvili, accusing him of igniting an unwinnable war with neighboring Russia.

An estimated 10,000 people gathered at Friday’s rally outside parliament and demanded democratic reforms. Many at the rally blame Saakashvili for starting the conflict with Russia on August 7 when he sent armed troops into South Ossetia in an attempt to reclaim the breakaway region.

That move sparked a forceful response from Russia in which troops from the north countered the attack with missile strikes and ground troops. Russian forces eventually pushed deep into Georgian territory before signing a ceasefire and agreeing to pull back troops. Since the end of the conflict Russia has maintained a military presence within South Ossetia as well as Abkhazia, a second breakaway region.

Saakashvili blamed military “shortcomings” for the failures associated with the conflict. The President continues to blame Russia for sparking the conflict.
