Brian Nichols Found Guilty in Atlanta Courthouse Murder Case

The six-week murder trial of courthouse shooter Brian Nichols has ended with a guilty verdict being delivered by an Atlanta jury on Friday and now the 37-year-old is facing the death penalty when the sentencing phase of the trial takes place on Monday.

Nichols stood accused of murdering Superior Court Judge Rowland Barnes and court reporter Julie Ann Brandau inside the Fulton County courthouse on March 11, 2005. Nichols then shot and killed sheriff’s Deputy Hoyt Teasley outside the courthouse and then gunned down federal agent David Wilhelm outside a home in Atlanta.

A massive manhunt for Nichols was launched but it wasn’t until the following day that a woman he had taken hostage, Ashley Smith Robinson, was able to alert authorities as to his location.

Nichols confessed to the murders but pled not guilty by reason of insanity, saying he had been delusional at the time of the shooting spree.

On that March day Nichols was being escorted by a deputy to a court room where he was standing trial for rape. After stealing the deputy’s gun he began his fatal spree.
