Everyone makes New Year's resolutions. It is a tradition, and sometimes laughable to see whether or not the resolutions will be fulfilled. Getting treatment for
drug and alcohol addiction is often one of those important New Year's resolutions. For many drug and alcohol treatment centers across the country, January is a busy time of the year. But the reasons may be as different as the people.
The choice to seek treatment may, in part, be post-Christmas convenience, according to Cindy Wier, executive vice president of Serenity House in Abilene, Texas. Wier believes that many people want to get through the hustle and bustle of the holidays before getting help for their addictions.
Since 2011 started a few weeks ago, the demand for services at Serenity House have increased tremendously.
"Our phones have been ringing off the wall, and we've had lots of admissions," said Wier.
About a week ago, about 30 people had called the
drug and alcohol treatment center to find out about their program. Serenity House has 92 beds and some of the people who called the drug and alcohol treatment center prior to Christmas told Wier they had targeted after the new year to get help with their recovery.
"They know that this is time for them to come and help," Wier said. "They want help, and they're ready for it."
The holidays are a catalyst for seeking recovery at a
drug and alcohol treatment center. This is often because of interventions from family and friends expressing concern about the drug and alcohol addiction that has consumed their lives.
