Women's Singles Match Results from the Australian Open

First Round Matches Including Historic Defeat

The first round of action for the women in Australia has seen four matches completed and one historic loss.

Spaniard Carla Suarez-Navarro defeated American Christina Mchale by winning the second and third sets 6 - 3 and 6 - 4 respectively.  Suarez Navarro dropped the first set 4 - 6.

Sixteenth ranked Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova bested German Kirsten Flipkens in two sets.  She won the first set 6 - 4 and won the second 7 - 6.

Ukrainian Kateryna Bondareko lost to China's Shuai Peng in three sets 6 - 2, 3 - 6, 6 - 8.

Former top ranked player in the world Dinara Safina of Russia was knocked out of the tournament without winning a single game by Kim Clijsters of Germany.  She lost 6 - 0, 6 - 0, marking the first time in Women's Tennis history that a former number one player failed to win at least one game.
