New Zealand is under new leadership as the National Party led by John Key ended a nine-year run of Labour led government from Prime Minister Helen Clark.
Key’s National Party capitalized on the economic downturn that has gripped New Zealand to earn 45% of the vote while Labour earned 34%. Clark enjoyed years of success as New Zealand’s leader but with the financial crisis that has swept the globe her party fell victim when voters went to the poll.
Speaking shortly after Clark conceded Key stated, “I want to run a centre-right government, a pragmatic and decisive government, but certainly one that reflects the views of all New Zealanders.”
Key was sure to point to address the financial crisis and warned New Zealanders that there was no quick fix saying, “We must make the most of our advantages because the state of the global economy and the global financial crisis means that the road ahead may well be a rocky one.”
