7.2 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Pakistan, Damages Reported

A strong earthquake struck southwestern Pakistan Tuesday, causing damages but no injuries or deaths. The tremor occurred at 3:23 p.m. ET and struck at a depth of 52 miles. The epicenter was located about 30 miles west of Dalbandin in the province of Baluchistan.

The quake was felt in other provinces, including Punjab and Sindh. Residents of Iran and India also reported feeling the tremor. Major aftershocks are expected. Tens of thousands of residents spent the night outside their homes after the tremor struck.

Officials estimated some 200 houses sustained damages. Ahmed Kamal, a spokesman for Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority, said affected areas were being supplied with tents, blankets and food. He said Pakistan received offers of help from the United States, China and Australia, but none were accepted “because it’s not required yet.”
