Synthetic drugs pose problems for teens, parents

Teens using synthetic drugs on the increase

A dizzying array of synthetic drugs have appeared on the market as of late, compounding the difficulty in combating the war on drugs.

“Synthetic drugs are problematic for a variety of reasons,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “They’re popular because, often times, synthetics produce the same type of high as their illegal powerhouse counterparts, but with added immediate, detrimental side effects. Currently, there’s a synthetic available that is marketed as an alternative to ecstasy that, chemically speaking, is nothing more than plant food and can be purchased at the local convenience store. Teens and young adults are ingesting this substance and experiencing side effects such as foaming at the mouth and profuse vomiting, many times landing them in the emergency room. Since this type of drug is legal, it’s a battle that’s difficult to fight. The ideal scenario would be for retailers to refuse to sell synthetics. Short of that happening, parents and community leaders need to make sure they get the message out on just how dangerous these types of drugs can be and how their use can lead to harder drug use and, ultimately, drug rehab.”

Many times, teens and young adults who use synthetics, use them as a stepping stone to more lethal and illegal alternatives making synthetics one of the predominant substances that are classified as gateway drugs. Synthetic drug use can be difficult to pinpoint as most synthetic drugs aren’t detected by traditional drug tests.
