At least 20 people were killed aboard a Russian nuclear submarine during a sea trial after a fire extinguishing system was mistakenly activated.
That 20 reportedly suffocated from the Freon gas contained in the fire extinguishing system. It is unclear what caused the system to go off unplanned as there had been no fire aboard the vessel. When a fire does break on a submarine the area in which the fire is located is evacuated before being sealed before activating the fire extinguishing system. Freon gas is used to extinguish a fire because it removes oxygen from the air, removing the necessary fuel for a fire.
According to reports the malfunction occurred in the nose of the submarine and when the fire extinguishing system activated there were still people in the area. When the Freon gas poured in those still in the area suffocated from lack of oxygen.
There were 208 people on board the submarine when the accident occurred, 14 of those killed were civilians while six were sailors.
