Iraq Sets Date for Provincial Elections

Iraq has announced they will hold elections in 14 of the country’s 18 provinces on January 31, a move seen as a key step in forming an inclusive government. Campaigns are expected to begin at the end of November or early December.

The four provinces that won’t hold elections will be Kirkuk and three autonomous Kurdish provinces. A date for elections in those provinces will be held at a later date.

Elections had been scheduled for October but were cancelled because of a disagreement on how the law would apply to the oil-rich city of Kirkuk. In September parliament agreed to set aside the issues of Kirkuk and the three Kurdish provinces so that they could move forward with elections in the remaining provinces.
