African Leaders in Johannesburg to Discuss Zimbabwe, DR Congo

With continued problems existing in the power-sharing deal in Zimbabwe and fresh fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo, several African leaders have met in Johannesburg in an effort to reach an agreement that would resolve the conflicts.

Leaders of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) had originally planned on discussing the issues tied to Zimbabwe but the recent outbreak of violence in Congo in which Tutsi rebel forces have clashed with militia and government forces.

Zimbabwe has been at issue for some time now after a disputed presidential election left Robert Mugabe in office while MDC opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai accused the ruling ZANU-PF of igniting violence and intimidation as a means of suppressing voters.

Mugabe and Tsvangirai eventually agreed to a deal that would leave Mugabe as president and place Tsvangirai in as prime minister but the deal is on the brink of collapse due to an issue regarding the appointment of ministers to cabinet positions.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo rebel forces have claimed they have been fighting to protect the safety of the minority Tutsi community against Hutu forces. The rebels have accused the DR Congo government of aiding the Hutus, a claim the government has denied.
