Russian Officials Investigate Deadly Nuclear Submarine Accident

Russian investigators are searching for answers to what triggered a fire extinguishing system to accidentally activate aboard a nuclear submarine and kill 20 people.

According to reports the 20 dead suffocated when Freon gas was released from the system. Freon gas removes oxygen from the air and is used to fight fires on submarines. It is believed those killed on the submarine were never aware that the Freon had been released as there was no fire on the vessel.

The nuclear submarine had been going through trials in the Sea of Japan when the accident occurred. As it was a trial, the submarine had several civilians on board and only three of the dead were said to be sailors while the rest were engineers, technicians and shipyard workers.

There were 208 people on board the nuclear submarine, significantly more than the 73 typically carried on such a vessel.
