The UK government has lifted their ban on exporting sensitive nuclear equipment and material to India, one month after the United States lifted their ban following a decision made by the Nuclear Suppliers Group.
India had been on the NSG’s “trigger list” up till last month but the decision to allow India access to nuclear technology has opened the door for several firms to sell directly to the country.
In a written statement read before parliament Foreign Office Minister Bill Rammell noted, “Since March 2002 UK policy has been to refuse all license applications for Trigger List items to India.”
"That policy has now changed and we will now consider on a case by case basis license applications for peaceful use of all items... destined for International Atomic Energy Agency safeguarded civil nuclear facilities in India."
India has been concentrating on developing their civil nuclear energy program to accommodate the growing demand for electricity in the country.
