Florida authorities say 2 Miami police officers were killed Thursday while attempting to serve a warrant to murder suspect Jonny Simms, 23. Officers Roger Castillo, Amanda Haworth, Diedre Beecher and Oscar Plasencia located a family member of Simms, who said they would “be right back.” That’s when Simms opened fire.
Officer Castillo, 21, was shot in the head and died at the scene. Officer Haworth, 23, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died at the Jackson Memorial Hospital. Simms was shot and killed by Officer Plasencia.
"Today, our community lost two more heroes. Our hearts ache for their families and their loved ones who are dealing with incomprehensible grief, loss and shock. These two officers were loving family members, friends and our neighbors. They wanted to serve their community and make it a better, safer place for all of us," Miami-Dade County Police Benevolent Association president John Rivera said in a statement.
"It's shocking. It's hurtful," said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez. "Really, I can't put it into words."
