Tampa Bay Rays’ third baseman Evan Longoria has been named the American League Rookie of the Year after voters from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America gave the 23-year-old the nod in unanimous fashion.
Longoria earned all 28 first-place votes after putting together one of the most remarkable rookie years in recent memory. The slugger led all rookies with 27 HRs, 85 RBIs and .531 slugging percentage. He finished his debut year with a .272 batting average while leading the Rays to the AL East title, the American League pennant and into the World Series.
