The United Nations World Food Program has begun to cut food rations to more than four million people in Zimbabwe after receiving no response from the international community to aid in feeding those most in need in the African country.
It is believed that if the UN receives no support soon then the food currently available will be gone by January. With the next harvest not expected until April that could leave millions of people in dire need of food.
The World Food Program has stressed the need for immediate assistance as distribution of food to certain areas of the county can take up to six weeks.
Zimbabwe has been experiencing food shortages since 2001. The country continues to find itself immersed in an internal struggle pitting President Robert Mugabe and his ZANU-PF party against opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai and the Movement for Democratic Change party. While the two sides have agreed to a power-sharing deal they implementation of such a government has failed to take place.
