A UN report has accused army troops of looting villages in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo while they continue to engage in battles with rebel troops loyal to general Laurent Nkunda.
According to the UN the army troops were targeting civilians in the Kanyabayonga area. The area is said to be under the control of the government but rumors of a rebel attack may have sparked the looting and violence in the villages.
UN peacekeepers and the Congolese army have been trying to quell the violence and indications are that things have quieted down.
More than 250,000 people have fled the violence that has dominated Congo. The Tutsi rebel forces under Nkunda have stated they have been trying to protect their minority community from militias organized by Rwandan Hutus who have existed in Congo since the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
Nkunda has demanded that President Joseph Kabila and his government engage in direct talks and failure to do so would result in a continued surge of violence in the country.
