Herb Score, Former Cleveland Indians Pitcher and Broadcaster, Dies at 75

Herb Score, the legendary Cleveland Indians pitcher and later “Voice of the Indians,” died at his Rocky River, Ohio home on Tuesday morning after a long illness. Score was 75.

Considered an incredible prospect when he nabbed the American League Rookie of the Year in 1955 after going 16-10 Score built on his success in 1956, posting a 20-9 mark and quickly became one of the most dominant left-handers in the game.

As quickly as Score’s career was ascending it all collapsed in 1957 after he was hit in the right eye by a line drive off the bat of Gil McDougald. The line drive shattered a number of bones in his face and while he recovered he never regained his dominant form. He finished his career 55-46, playing his final game in a Chicago White Sox uniform in 1962.

In 1963 Score became a play-by-play broadcaster for the Indians and remained in the booth until 1997. Score was inducted into the Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 1998.

Cleveland Indians team president Paul Dolan spoke of the loss in a statement that read, “Today is a sad day for the Cleveland Indians family and for Cleveland Indians fans everywhere. We have lost one of the greatest men in the history of our franchise. Generations of Indians fans owe their love of the Tribe to Herb Score, who was a powerful pitcher and legendary broadcaster. Our thoughts and prayers are with Nancy and the family.”
