David Essex to join EastEnders

Veteran pop star David Essex is joining the cast of 'EastEnders' for a second time.

The 63-year-old singer will play Alfie Moon's (Shane Richie) estranged uncle Eddie, and is "really excited" about joining the cast, despite having pulled out of a planned role in the BBC One soap five years ago.

In 2005, David had signed up to play Honey Mitchell's (Emma Barton) father Jack, but had to withdraw at the last minute when the role clashed with his musical commitments.

He said: "Being an East Ender myself, I'm really excited to be joining the Square. Eddie Moon is a great character.

"I can't wait to get to grips with the role and work with such a fantastic cast. I'm really pleased that I've been able to make filming work around my tour dates this time."

David - who was born in Plaistow, East London - will make his first appearance as cheeky chappie Eddie later this year.

Bryan Kirkwood, executive producer of the soap, added: "He is a unique talent with a legion of fans and he will bring warmth and charisma.

"His arrival brings a new generation of the Moon family to Walford."
