Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir Declares Immediate Ceasefire in Darfur

Sudan’s President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, facing continued pressure from the international community, has declared an immediate ceasefire in the troubled region of Darfur.

While Bashir announced the ceasefire following negotiations these talks did not include several of the rebel forces that have not indicated any willingness to lay down their arms. Despite the rebels apparent unwillingness to abide by the ceasefire Bashir said he would disarm militias and limit the use of weapons by government troops.

The call for peace in the region came after Bashir heard recommendations for peace by the Sudan People’s Initiative, an organization designed to orchestrate peace in Darfur.

The President noted, “I hereby announce our immediate unconditional ceasefire between the armed forces and the warring factions, provided that an effective monitoring mechanism is put into action and observed by all involved parties.”

Bashir has been heavily criticized by the international community and has been blamed by many for the genocide that has left more than 300,000 dead in Darfur since 2003.
