Russian President Demity Medvedev says authorities believe Monday’s explosion at the Domodedovo Airport in Moscow was a terror attack possibly carried out by a suicide bomber.
"From the preliminary information we have, it was a terror attack," Medvedev said during a televised briefing.
Thousands of people were at the airport when the explosion occurred around 4:40 p.m. local time. At least 31 people were killed and 130 others wounded.
In recent years they have been many attacks on Russian trains and subways. The last attack involving Russian air transportation occurred in 2004 when two suicide bombers boarded two planes at Domodedovo and detonated their explosives mid flight. All 90 people aboard the planes were killed.
After Monday’s attack President Medvedev called for tighter security at Moscow’s airports, subway system and trains.
