Members of Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU-PF party have reportedly put pressure on President Robert Mugabe to abide by the recommendation put forth by the Southern African Development Community and form a new government despite continued protests from members of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change.
Mugabe’s ZANU-PF members have urged him to take the SADC recommendation that suggested a key cabinet post should be shared with the MDC. That recommendation has been rejected by the MDC which has said they should control the home ministry which would include the police.
The two sides had signed to a power-sharing deal back in September after months of negotiations following a contested presidential election. MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai had accused Mugabe of using violence and intimidation to steal the election, claims that Mugabe has denied.
According to the power-sharing deal that had been brokered by former South African President Thabo Mbeki the office of the presidency would still be occupied by Mugabe while Tsvangirai would become prime minister. As part of the deal the appointment of ministers to cabinet posts would also be divided but Mugabe quickly placed members of his party in what were deemed the most important posts.
Tsvangirai protested and declared the agreement had been violated and threatened to pull the MDC out of the talks. At issue for the MDC is the cabinet post of home ministry as they do not want Mugabe to have control of the military as well as the police force.
