Joe Maddon Named American League Manager of the Year

Joe Maddon has been named the American League Manager of the Year, collecting 27 of the 28 first place votes from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

The Tampa Bay Rays skipper led his squad to an improbable World Series run after shocking the baseball world with a 97-65 record after posting a 66-96 record in 2007. Maddon guided the Rays to their first American League East title and then knocked off the Chicago White Sox in the ALDS and followed with an ALCS victory over the Boston Red Sox before falling to the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series.

Ron Gardenhire, manager of the Minnesota Twins, collected the only other first-place vote.
