Key Member of South Africa’s ANC Party Resigns

Smuts Ngonyama, the former head of communications for South Africa’s ruling African National Congress, has resigned from the party. Ngonyama becomes the latest prominent member of the party to resign since former South African President and ANC leader Thabo Mbeki was forced to resign.

The split comes as a new party consisting of former ANC members is formed and officially registered.

The new party, tentatively named the Congress of the People, has organized a press conference at which Ngonyama is expected to explain his decision.

Former ANC Defense Minister Mosiuoa Lekota is heading up the Congress of the People. He had been a key member of Mbeki’s cabinet before resigning following the former President’s removal.
