Joseph Fritzl, the Austrian father who stands accused of imprisoning his daughter in a cellar while fathering seven children with her, has now been charged with the murder of one of those children.
The murder charge is tied to the death of a baby who, as Fritzl told police, died shortly after birth. According to prosecutors Fritzl recognized the baby was ill but refused to seek medical attention. After the baby died Fritzl threw the body in an incinerator.
That murder charge could carry a 10-years to life sentence.
Fritzl is also facing charges of slavery and rape where he faces an additional 20-year sentence. The 73-year-old Fritzl imprisoned his daughter, Elisabeth, for 24 years and over that time he fathered the seven children. Three of those children lived with him and his wife upstairs while the remaining three were forced to live in the cellar with their mother.
The story came to light in April when the eldest daughter, Kerstin, became ill and was taken to a hospital. It was soon uncovered that she had been forced to live in a cellar with two siblings and her mother and that Fritzl was her father.
