Brett Favre has the NY Jets sitting at 6-3 while Matt Cassel has the New England Patriots in the same position and on Thursday night one of the two will have their team atop the AFC East with an inside track to the AFC playoffs. Both teams are 2-1 in the division and with all four teams currently above .500 a playoff spot could be determined by divisional record.
New York will be looking for some revenge, having dropped their first game against the Patriots in Week Two. The Jets are riding a three game winning streak and while two of those wins were against the Chiefs and the Rams, they do appear to be clicking at the right time. As for the Patriots, they have recovered nicely from an embarrassing home loss to the Dolphins in Week 3 and have won their last three home games.
While many expected Favre to lead the Jets to the playoffs most thought Cassel would be lucky to get the Patriots to .500 as New England’s season appeared dead in the water after Tom Brady was lost for the year. Now both quarterbacks are in position to continue their impressive runs.
For Favre it’s been a typical year as the gunslinger has tossed 16 TDs while being intercepted 12 times, no surprise as the legend is the NFL’s all time leader in both categories. Fortunately for Favre he’s got Thomas Jones in the backfield and he has been a reliable source of yards for the Jets as he ranks fifth in the NFL with 750 yards while finding the endzone eight times.
Overall the Jets have the #14 ranked offense in the NFL, one notch above the Patriots who have been getting the job done with a balanced attack. New England is just one of four teams with a winning record that is averaging less than 200 passing yards per game. As odd as that is even more surprising is their leading rusher, Sammy Morris, hasn’t played the last three games due to a knee injury.
Both teams match up defensively as well as the Jets come into New England with the #10 overall defense while the Pats are at #12. New York will look to force Cassel into a passing game and with a dominant rushing defense that shouldn’t be a problem. The Jets have allowed just 76.4 yards per game on the ground. New England’s rushing defense is currently #12 but will certainly be tested by Jones on Thursday night.
Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. ET on the NFL Network.
