Toyota Announces Recall of 1.7 Million Cars

Toyota announced Wednesday two recalls involving about 1.7 million cars. Both recalls were issued for possible fuel leaks in the vehicles.

The first recall involves about 1.2 million vehicles in Japan and Europe. Sixteen different models manufactured between 2000 and 2008 are recalled in Japan while 140,000 Avensis and Tourer models are recalled in Europe. The automaker says the fuel pipes in the vehicles may begin to crack, which could cause fuel leaks.

The second recall involves 245,000 Lexus vehicles in the United States. Toyota warns the fuel pressure sensor in the affected vehicles may loosen over time, causing fuel to leak.

Toyota spokeswoman Shiori Hashimoto says the company has received complaints about fuel leaks, but no accidents related to the problem have been reported. “We are redoubling our efforts to listen to our customers and to swiftly reflect any complaints in our recall decisions,” said Hashimoto. “The latest recalls are part of that drive.”
