The Atlanta Hawks suffered their first loss Wednesday, losing to the reigning NBA champion Boston Celtics, 103-102.
NBA finals MVP Paul Pierce hit a fallaway jumper with 0.5 seconds left to give Boston (8-1) the win and the Hawks (6-1) their first loss this season and their fourth straight loss against the Celtics.
Pierce led all scorers with 34 points, Kevin Garnett had 25 with 12 rebounds and Rajon Rondo had 10 assists for the Celtics. Ray Allen scored 17 points, eight of which came in an 18-2 resurgent run in the second quarter to go into halftime with a tie score.
Joe Johnson led the Hawks with 28 points and seven assists. The Hawks had five players in double-figures including Ronald "Flip" Murray with 14 off the bench and Mike Bibby with 16.
Last season, the Hawks received their first loss in their second game and didn't win their sixth game until Nov. 28. This was the franchise's best start since they went 11-0 in 1997-98.
The Hawks were only the second undefeated team in the NBA, along with the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers remain with an undefeated record after defeating the New Orleans Hornets, 93-86.
